For the one who locks up after both groups and has quietly been keeping score.
You have looked at the state of it and drawn a conclusion. Nearly everybody has. So start here: the most hopeful sentence in the New Testament about Christians being one was spoken by somebody who was about to watch every friend He had abandon Him within six hours.
That is not a detail to hurry past. He prays it at the table. Within the night, one of them sells Him, one denies Him three times in a courtyard, and the rest run so completely that the gospels barely bother to describe it.
So the prayer was not offered in optimism about the material. He knew exactly what those eleven would do before the sun came up. He asked anyway, out loud, with every one of them listening.
Which means the state of the church has never been an argument against that prayer. It was prayed with the worst possible evidence sitting around the table eating.
He thinks about this on Sunday nights, going round the hall with the keys, because he sees the evidence twice a day and has stopped expecting it to improve.
The prayer was made by somebody who already knew exactly what the evidence would look like. The written Word puts the asking in Christ's own mouth on that night, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying what He asked for.
What You See When You Hold Both Sets of Keys
One group has the hall in the morning and one has it at five, and he does the locking up after both.
He sees what nobody in either group sees. He knows that both of them pray for the town in almost identical words. He knows that both have a woman in their sixties who arrives early to put the heating on. He knows that both leave the hymn books in the same slightly wrong place.
He also knows that in eleven years the morning group and the evening group have never once been in the building at the same time. That is not an accident of scheduling, and neither group would ever put it that way.
That is a particular kind of tiredness, and none of it comes from disliking anybody. It comes from seeing two rooms that belong together, twice every Sunday, in the same room, four hours apart, for eleven years.
Who Prayed It, and When
Here's the sentence, prayed hours before everything came apart:
Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one.John 17:20-21, the opening lines (KJV)
He is praying for the eleven and for everybody who would believe later through what they said, which is both of the groups that use that hall and the man with the keys.
And He prays it in full knowledge of the courtyard, the money, and the running. Not hoping they would hold. Knowing they would not, and asking for oneness over them regardless.
You are named in a prayer that was made without any optimism about the evidence. The written Word has Him asking on the worst possible night, and the Holy Spirit keeps that request live over a shared hall.
Evidence Was Never the Basis of It
Here's what I'd carry out of that hall if I could take a single thing away with me.
If the prayer had rested on how His people were doing, it would have collapsed before breakfast. It didn't, because it never rested there. It rested on what He was asking His Father for, and the Father's character is not adjusted by a courtyard.
That is why eleven years of locking up after two groups is not a case against anything. The man with the keys has been treating his own observations as data about whether the prayer is working, and they were never data about that.
They are data about Sunday in one building in one town. The prayer is being answered somewhere considerably larger than a hall, by somebody who was not surprised by any of it.
Your observations were never evidence about whether the prayer is working. The written Word rests it on what the Father was asked rather than on how the people behaved, and the Holy Spirit is the one holding the outcome.
No Part of This Is an Accusation
Let me be plain, because there's a version of this message that would do you real harm and I won't write it.
You have not failed it. You are not in the failing position, because it was never assigned to you, and eleven years of careful neutrality with two sets of keys is service rather than a botched project.
I am also not handing you a job. Nothing here asks you to introduce the two groups, suggest anything, or take on reunifying them as a piece of work. That would be the same tiredness wearing better clothes.
You can see it twice a Sunday and take no responsibility for closing it. Scripture leaves the request where He made it, and the Holy Spirit answers rather than delegates.
The Score You Can Stop Keeping
Here's the turn, and it's quieter than a decision and steadier than a mood.
That tiredness was never cynicism in you. It came from seeing the same room twice a Sunday for eleven years and treating what you saw as a report on whether a prayer of Christ's was working. Nobody told you it wasn't that, and nobody has thought to mention it since.
I'm mentioning it now. He prayed it knowing about the courtyard, the money and the running. Your Sundays have never once been the evidence, and they were never the mechanism either.
You are inside that prayer rather than in charge of answering it. The written Word has Him asking on the worst night there was, and the Holy Spirit makes He is still praying it a place to stand while you lock up.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
Say this once, slowly, with the lights off and the keys in your hand.
He prayed for our oneness on the last night, and the asking has never ended. The Word of God has Him asking for it hours before every friend He had abandoned Him, so the evidence was never what it rested on. The Holy Spirit holds me inside the asking and carries the rest Himself. I am not responsible for reunifying two groups that share a hall and nothing else. I hold the distance in my heart and the closing of it in His hands. When I lock the door tonight, I can leave the scorekeeping in the building.
