You Are Inside The Prayer

For the one who was born into a family argument and quietly assumed they were meant to end it.

Picture a woman of fifty two in a car outside a crematorium, twenty minutes after everybody else has driven away.

The service was for an aunt, and it was the first time in nineteen years that both halves of the family had been in one building. It went perfectly well. People were careful and warm. Nobody said anything, which is how that family does grief and most else besides.

She is sitting in the car because she has just realized something that has taken her five decades to see, and she cannot drive while she is looking at it.

She was born in 1974, into the middle of an argument that started in 1961. She has never known what it was actually about. Nobody living can tell her the original terms, and the two people who could have are both in the ground, one of them since this afternoon.

And she has spent her entire adult life quietly believing that she was the one who was supposed to fix it. Not as a plan. As a low background hum, present at every wedding and funeral, which is why she goes to all of them and why she leaves all of them exhausted.

You were born inside somebody else's argument, and you were never appointed to end it. The written Word gives the asking to Christ alone, and the Holy Spirit bears the weight of it.

The Hum Nobody Turned On

Here's how a person ends up carrying this, and it is not through arrogance.

A child works out very early that the adults are careful with each other, and children read carefulness as a problem, and problems in a child's world are puzzles that can be solved by being good enough. That is not a belief anybody teaches. It is an inference, drawn at seven, and it does not get reviewed.

So she is fifty two and still, at every family event, she is the one watching the room. Seating. Conversations. Who is talking to whom and for how long. It has never once been a plan, and it has organized her behavior at every gathering for forty five years.

You may have your own version of this. It isn't grandiosity. It's what a conscientious child concludes in a quiet house, still running in a grown woman's car at half past three in the afternoon.

Who Is Praying, and Who Is Prayed For

Here's Jesus on the last night, praying out loud with His friends in the room:

Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one.John 17:20-21, the opening lines (KJV)

Read the positions in that sentence carefully, because they are the whole of what this message has to give.

There is one person asking. There is a Father being asked. Everybody else, the eleven and every believer who would come afterward, is inside the request as the subject of it.

There is no fourth position. Nowhere in that sentence is there a place for somebody who is also responsible for the outcome, and there has never been a vacancy for one.

There is no fourth position in that sentence, and there never was a vacancy for you. The written Word gives one asker, one Father, and everybody else inside the request, and the Holy Spirit keeps you where it puts you.

You Were Born Into It, Not Appointed Over It

Here's what I'd carry out of that car park if I could take a single thing away with me.

Being inside something and being responsible for it feel almost identical when you have never been outside it. She has been in that family argument since before she could speak, and from the inside the argument looks like a room she is standing in the middle of.

She is not in the middle of it. She is in it, which is a completely different preposition. It happened to her rather than through her, it started thirteen years before she existed, and the people who set its terms have both now been buried.

A thing you were born into is a weather rather than a job. You can be soaked by weather your whole life without any of it being your doing, and the tiredness of fifty two years is the tiredness of somebody who has been wet and thought it was her fault.

You have been standing in weather for fifty two years and calling it a job. The written Word puts the asking in Christ's mouth and you in the scope, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can tell the two apart in you.

No Part of This Is an Accusation

Let me be plain, because there's a version of this message that would do you real harm and I refuse to write it.

You have not failed it. There is no version of this in which a woman born in 1974 failed to repair something that began in 1961, and a prayer of Christ's has never been waiting on how the seating went at a funeral.

There is no assignment in any of this. Nothing here asks you to open the subject, reach out, or take the family on as a piece of work, because that is the identical hum with a spiritual frequency.

You can be in the family and carry none of the responsibility for the argument. Scripture hands the request to nobody, and the Holy Spirit does the work rather than handing it on.
