The Chalk Line and the Survey

This message is for A volunteer site foreman discovers that the chalk boundary he inherited cuts through a neighbor's garden and needs to hand the drawing of belonging back to God.

For the believer who has been treating a working mark as though it were the boundary.

Every builder alive knows the difference between a chalk line and a survey, and almost nobody carries that knowledge into the rest of their life.

A chalk line is snapped on site, in the morning, by whoever got there first. It's blue, it's approximate to within a few millimeters, and it exists so that a crew can get on with the day without waiting for a man with instruments. It is genuinely useful and it is nobody's final word about anything.

A survey is a different class of object. It's measured against fixed points, it's recorded, it's lodged somewhere, and it decides where the boundary actually is when there's a dispute.

Snap a chalk line often enough and you will start treating it as the survey. That's not stupidity. It's what happens when the provisional thing is the one you see every single morning and the authoritative one lives in a drawer in an office you have never visited.

He'd been building for thirty one years before anybody pointed this out to him about his own head.

You have been reading a working mark as though it were the boundary, and it was never surveyed. The written Word says the Lord knows the ones who are His, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that knowledge where it was placed.

The Chalk Line and the Survey

What a Morning Line Becomes by Thursday

Here's how it goes on a site, and here's how it goes in a person.

Monday, somebody snaps a line so the work can start. It's understood by everybody as provisional. By Wednesday three trades have set out from it. By Thursday a wall is up on it. The line has stopped being a suggestion and become a fact, and nobody involved ever decided to promote it.

The same thing happened in you somewhere around the age of nine. Somebody snapped a chalk line, probably without meaning to, in a tone of voice or a pause before a name. You set out from it because it was what was there. Forty years of work have now been built off that mark.

You aren't bigoted and you aren't careless. You're a person who started from the line that was on the floor when you arrived, which is what every single one of us did.

The Seal Says Who Knows

Here's Paul, writing to Timothy in a letter full of worry about who could be trusted:

Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his.2 Timothy 2:19 (KJV)

Notice what's called sure in that sentence. Not Timothy's judgment about the people who'd drifted. Not Paul's, and he had more standing to make a list than anybody in the correspondence.

The foundation stands sure, and the seal on it is the Lord's knowledge. That's the survey. Everything either of those men could have written down about who was really in would have been chalk.

The survey exists and it is God's, and yours was always a working mark. The written Word puts the knowing in His hands alone, and the Holy Spirit keeps it there rather than handing it to you.

You Have Never Seen the Survey

Here's what I'd carry off that site if I could take a single thing away with me.

The survey isn't missing. It exists, it's precise, and it settles the boundary completely. What's true is that he has never seen it, and no amount of standing on his own chalk line will bring it out of the drawer.

That's an oddly comforting thing to realize, because it means his line was never in competition with anything. It was a working mark on a floor, and the real boundary has been lodged somewhere else the whole time, by somebody with instruments, in a form that does not need his agreement.

So he can stop defending a blue line. It was never load bearing. It was only ever there so the work could start.

The real boundary is lodged somewhere you have never been, and it does not need your agreement. The written Word seals the foundation with God's own knowing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets you stop defending chalk.

Nothing Here Snaps a New Line

Let me be plain, because there's a version of this message that would do harm and I refuse to write it.

I'm not telling you who is in. That is not a question I've been handed, and a message that answered it would have snapped a fresh chalk line and called it a survey, which is the exact error being described.

Nor am I declaring that the door is open to all, which would be the same ruling reversed. That's the same act performed from the opposite direction, and it is still a man with a chalk box doing a surveyor's job.

You can stop defending your line without drawing a different one. The written Word leaves that knowledge with God alone, and the Holy Spirit keeps it rather than putting a pencil in your hand.

The Line You Can Stop Standing On

Here's the turn, and it's quieter than a decision and steadier than a mood.

That mark was never malice in you. It was a chalk line snapped before you could read, built off by three trades, and promoted to a boundary by nothing more than time and use. Nobody set it out to deceive you, and nobody has thought to mention that it was never surveyed.

I'm mentioning it now. There is a survey. It is exact, it is sealed, and it was made by somebody who knows every fixed point. You have not seen it, and you were never going to be asked to.

You can step off the chalk and let the survey stand where it is. The written Word says the Lord knows them that are His, and the Holy Spirit makes the line I was handed is not the one He draws a place to stand down rather than a new claim.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Say this once, slowly, with the name in your mind and the chalk box shut.

He knows the ones who are His, and the inherited boundary I was handed is not the line He draws. The Word of God says the foundation of God stands sure, sealed by the fact that the Lord knows them that are His, so the survey was never mine to make. I hand the drawing of belonging back to God, and the Holy Spirit keeps that measurement in His hands rather than in mine. I am not required to defend a mark that somebody snapped before I could read. I keep every good thing the men before me taught me, and I hand this back rather than passing it on. When I meet that name in the road, I can meet him without checking the floor.
