For the volunteer who cannot bring themselves to pick up a card from the wrong church.
Imagine a man in a hospital car park at half past four, not starting the car, looking at a small printed card on the passenger seat.
Somebody put it in his hand on the ward. It was a woman two beds along from the man he'd come to visit. She is from a church across the city that his own church has almost no dealings with, and she asked him, very simply, whether he would pray for her daughter.
The card has the daughter's name on it, one line about what is wrong, and the name of that church printed along the bottom in a typeface somebody chose in about 1998.
He took it. Of course he took it. What he has not done, in three days, is pray for the girl, and he cannot give himself a reason that holds up for more than about nine seconds.
It isn't that he doubts the request. It's that praying it feels, in some way he cannot articulate, like signing something. As though picking up that card commits him to a position about that building, that tradition, and four hundred years of argument he has never studied and cannot resolve.
You can pray for one person without signing anything about their tradition. The written Word has Christ asking for that oneness Himself, and the Holy Spirit carries what He asked for.
The Weight That Attaches Itself to a Small Thing
Here's the mechanism, and it operates in people who are conscientious rather than in people who are cold.
A small act gets read as a statement. Praying for a girl becomes praying for a girl from there, which becomes a position about there, which becomes a view on everything that has ever separated here from there.
None of that was in the request. The woman two beds along wanted somebody to pray for her daughter. She was not asking him to adjudicate anything, and she would be genuinely bewildered to learn that her card had been sitting on a passenger seat for three days under that kind of weight.
He is not a bigot. He is a careful man who has quietly come to believe that any warmth extended across that gap has to be justified, and justification is hard work, and so the card sits there.
Who Is Doing the Asking
Here's Jesus on the last night, praying out loud with His friends in the room:
Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one.John 17:20-21, the opening lines (KJV)
Read who holds the request. He does. Not the eleven, who are about to scatter badly. Not the people who would believe later through their word, which is where that woman, her daughter and the man in the car park all stand.
Everybody else in that sentence is inside it as somebody being prayed for. Nobody is invited to co-sign.
You are inside that prayer as somebody prayed for, and there is nothing to co-sign. The written Word keeps the asking in His mouth, and the Holy Spirit keeps you where the sentence puts you.
A Prayer for One Person Is Not a Treaty
Here's what I'd carry out of that car park if I could take a single thing away with me.
A treaty commits two parties to terms. It has clauses, it settles disputed questions, and signing it means you have taken a view on everything inside it. That is the document he thinks is on the passenger seat.
A prayer for a sick girl commits nobody to anything. It is one person asking God about another person by name. It settles no question, concedes no ground, and has never once obliged anybody to hold a position about a building.
Those two are not remotely the same object, and the entire three days of hesitation comes from mistaking one for the other in a car park with the engine off.
A prayer for one person by name is not a treaty and settles nothing. The written Word puts the whole question of oneness in Christ's hands, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can free your mouth to pray a name.
No Part of This Is an Accusation
Let me be plain, because there's a version of this message that would do real harm and I refuse to write it.
You have not failed it. It is not the kind of thing available to you to fail, because He asked for it, He is still asking, and it has never waited on the conduct of a hospital volunteer in a car park.
There is no assignment in any of this. Nothing here asks you to visit that church, resolve anything, or take on the division in your city as a piece of work. That would be the same weight with a spiritual coat on it.
You can pray the name and take on nothing about the four hundred years. Scripture leaves the request where He made it, and the Holy Spirit answers rather than delegates.
The Card You Can Pick Up
Here's the turn, and it's quieter than a decision and steadier than a mood.
The three days were never coldness in you. It was a careful man reading a small kindness as a signature, because somewhere along the line warmth across that gap started requiring justification. Nobody set that up deliberately, and nobody has thought to say that a prayer is not a document.
I'm saying it now. There is nothing on that card to sign. A name, one line, and a typeface from 1998, and a mother two beds along who asked a stranger for the only thing she could think of.
You belong in that prayer as its subject and not as its guarantor. The written Word puts the asking in His mouth on the last night, and the Holy Spirit makes He is still praying it a place to stand while you say a girl's name.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
Say this once, slowly, with the card in your hand and the engine off.
He asked His Father that we would be one, and He has not stopped asking. The Word of God puts that asking in His own mouth and names everybody who would believe through their word, which includes the woman two beds along. The Holy Spirit seats me in that request rather than under its outcome. I am not responsible for repairing the whole divided church before I am allowed to pray for one sick girl. The distance still matters to me, and the mending of it belongs to Him. When I turn the key tonight, I can say her name first.
