The Wristband I Had Not Printed

This message is for A volunteer concert organizer discovers he never printed a wristband for a Christian guest from an unfamiliar tradition and needs to hand the final knowledge of belonging back to God.

For the believer who found the boundary in a box of two hundred and nine.

There are two hundred and ten names on the list and two hundred and nine wristbands in the box.

He counted three times, because this is the sort of thing you count three times. Then he laid them out on the trestle table in rows of twenty, which took nine minutes, and found the gap by elimination.

It's a guest from a church on the far side of town, a man who has come to help with the sound desk, who was added to the list in August by somebody else and confirmed by email twice.

The printer did not skip him. He knows this because he ran the print job himself, off a spreadsheet, and he has the spreadsheet open now on a laptop beside the box.

The name is not on the spreadsheet. It's on the list. Somewhere between one document and the other, with his own hands doing the copying, one name out of two hundred and ten did not make the crossing, and he has no memory of the moment at all.

You can find an inherited boundary by finding out which name did not make the crossing. The written Word says the Lord knows the ones who are His, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that knowing where it was placed.

The Wristband I Had Not Printed

The Error That Was Not Random

Two hundred and ten items, one omission. Any sensible person would call that a clerical error and move on, and for about twenty minutes he did.

What stopped him was the arithmetic he did not want to do. If one name in two hundred and ten drops at random, the chance of it being the one guest from the unfamiliar church is roughly one in two hundred and ten.

That isn't proof of anything, and he knows it. A single event proves nothing and he'd say the same to anybody who tried to build a case on it.

But he also knows what he felt when he identified the gap, which was not surprise. It was a small, sinking familiarity, the sensation of a suspicion being confirmed rather than a fact being discovered, and that reaction is data about him rather than about the printer.

The Seal on the Foundation

Here's Paul, writing to Timothy about people he can no longer vouch for:

Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his.2 Timothy 2:19 (KJV)

Read who does the knowing. Not Timothy, worried and close to it. Not Paul, who knew the individuals by name and had been right about a good many of them.

That verb belongs to the Lord. That's the seal on the whole structure, and it's the one item in the letter that neither man is permitted to handle.

The knowing is sealed by God, and no printing error has ever touched what He knows. The written Word puts it in His hands alone, and the Holy Spirit keeps it there rather than passing it to a spreadsheet.

A Wristband Is Not Permission, It Is Recognition

Here's what I'd carry off that trestle table if I could take a single thing away with me.

Nobody at that event will be turned away for want of a wristband. It's a small building, everybody knows everybody, and the door is staffed by two people who would wave him through without a thought.

What a wristband actually does is say we were expecting you. It's recognition rather than permission, and that is precisely why an absent one lands the way it does. Being let in without one is not the same experience as having one with your name on it in a box that somebody prepared last week.

So the omission cost nothing in access and a great deal in welcome. Those two are easy to confuse from the side of the person holding the box, and impossible to confuse from the side of the man at the door.

A wristband is not permission, it is somebody saying we were expecting you. The written Word seals the knowing with God, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can make an absent name visible before the doors open.

Nothing Here Issues Anybody a Verdict

Let me be plain, because there's a version of this message that would do harm and I won't write it.

Who belongs is not a question I am answering here. That question has not been handed to me, and a message that answered it would simply have printed my spreadsheet instead of yours.

I am not proclaiming that everyone counts either. That is the same act with the warmth turned up, and it is still a man with a printer doing what the verse seals to God.

You can print the band without appointing yourself the one who decides. Scripture hands the knowing back to God rather than reassigning it, and the Holy Spirit does the knowing rather than the reissuing.

The Name You Can Put Back on the List

Here's the turn, and it's quieter than a decision and steadier than a mood.

That omission was never contempt in you. It was an inherited boundary operating at the level of the hands, between one document and another, in a job you did carefully and would swear you did fairly. Nobody installed it deliberately, and nobody has thought to count the box before.

You have counted it now. Two hundred and ten on the list, two hundred and nine in the box, and a man who arrived two hours early with his own cables.

You can hand his belonging back to the One whose seal it is. The written Word says the Lord knows them that are His, and the Holy Spirit makes the line I was handed is not the one He draws a place to stand down rather than a new list.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Say this once, slowly, with the box shut and the spreadsheet closed.

The Lord knows the ones who belong to Him, and what I inherited is not that line. The Word of God says the foundation of God stands sure, sealed by the fact that the Lord knows them that are His, so the final knowledge of belonging was never mine to print. I hand that knowledge back to God rather than keeping it in a spreadsheet, and the Holy Spirit keeps it in His hands. I am not required to run a boundary that works in my hands and never once reaches my judgment. I keep every good thing this church has given me, and I hand this back rather than passing it on. When I print the bands next year, his name goes on first.
