For the intercessor who discovered the boundary by noticing an absence.
An inherited line almost never shows up as something you did. It shows up as something that isn't there.
That's why people who genuinely examine themselves can carry one for forty years without finding it. You go looking for a thought you had, a judgment you made, a sentence you'd be ashamed of, and there isn't one, because that is not the form these take.
They take the form of a gap. A name that didn't get written. A message that didn't get sent because it didn't occur to you. An invitation that was never withheld and was also never extended.
You cannot find an absence by examining your conduct, because your conduct is where the absence isn't.
She found hers on a Saturday, cleaning the boards in the prayer room, which is a job she does twice a year and nobody else wants.
Forty one cards on the wall. She has written most of them herself over three years. Taking them down to wipe the cork, she found herself counting, and then counting again, and then standing there with a cloth working out who was not on it.
An inherited boundary will not show up in what you did, only in what is not there. The written Word says the Lord knows the ones who are His, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that knowing in His hands.
Forty One Cards and One Gap
The missing name belongs to a woman who has been in that building most weeks for two years.
She came from a tradition this congregation has very little contact with, she has never asked for anything, and she sat with a family through a bereavement in the spring in a way people still mention.
There is no card for her. Not because a request was declined. Because a request was never made, and it was never made because nobody thought to ask, and nobody thought to ask because some quiet arithmetic had already placed her slightly outside the group the cards are for.
That arithmetic was not performed by anybody in particular. It was performed by all of them at once, without a word, and it has produced a wall with forty one cards and one hole in it.
The Seal on the Foundation
Here's Paul, writing to Timothy about a situation full of people he is no longer sure of:
Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his.2 Timothy 2:19 (KJV)
Read where the certainty is placed. Not with Timothy, anxious and near the problem. Not with Paul, who knew these people personally and had been right about many of them.
The Lord knows them that are His. That is the seal, the whole seal, and neither of the two men in that letter is handed it.
The knowing is sealed as God's, and no gap on any wall changes what He knows. The written Word puts it entirely in His hands, and the Holy Spirit keeps it there rather than passing it to a room's quiet arithmetic.
An Absence Has No Author
Here's what I'd carry out of that prayer room if I could take a single thing away with me.
If somebody had taken her card down, there would be a person to speak to. A decision, a reason, a conversation, possibly an apology, and the whole matter could be dealt with in an afternoon.
Nobody took it down. It was never put up, which means there is no author, no decision and nothing to confront. An absence has no author, and that is exactly why absences last.
That's the real cruelty of an inherited line, and it is a cruelty nobody committed. It works by omission, omission leaves no fingerprints, and the person it works on experiences it only as a faint sense of not quite being included in something they cannot name.
An absence has no author, and that is precisely why it lasts. The written Word seals the knowing with God, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can make a gap visible before another year passes.
Nothing Here Puts Anyone on a Wall in Judgment
Let me be plain, because there's a version of this message that would do harm and I won't write it.
I will not be handing you a ruling on anybody. That question has not been handed to me, and a message that answered it would simply have rebuilt the wall with my arithmetic instead of the room's.
I'm also not announcing that everyone is in, which is the same act made comfortable. Both are a person doing the knowing that the verse seals to God.
You can write the card without appointing yourself the one who decides. Scripture hands the knowing back to God rather than reassigning it, and the Holy Spirit does the knowing rather than the re-sorting.
The Card You Can Write This Week
Here's the turn, and it's quieter than a decision and steadier than a mood.
That gap was never a decision in you. It was an arithmetic performed by a room without a word being said, producing an absence with no author, on a wall you have kept faithfully for three years. Nobody withheld anything, and nobody has thought to count the cards.
You have counted them now. Forty one, and one woman who sat in a hallway for three afternoons in April with a folding chair from her own car.
You can hand her belonging back to the One whose seal it is. The written Word says the Lord knows them that are His, and the Holy Spirit makes the line I was handed is not the one He draws a place to stand down rather than a new boundary.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
Say this once, slowly, with the cork wiped and the cards back up.
He knows whose they are, and the line handed down to me is not His. The Word of God says the foundation of God stands sure, sealed by the fact that the Lord knows them that are His, so her belonging was never mine to arrange. I return that boundary to God without drawing a new one in its place, and the Holy Spirit keeps the knowing in His hands. I am not required to run an arithmetic nobody performed and everybody accepted. I keep every good thing this room has given me, and I hand this back rather than passing it on. When I write the cards on Saturday, I can write hers first.
