Whose Bread It IsLuke 22:19-20

The Mark Beneath the Table

This message is for A furniture restorer working alone after closing finds a maker's mark beneath a scarred dining table and needs to remember that the table belongs to Christ before it belongs to any room.

For the believer who has been arguing about a table that was signed underneath all along.

Every table in the world is stamped somewhere the diners never look.

That's literally true of good furniture and it's true of this one. The maker signs the underside, or the rail, or the inside of a leg. Not the top, where the plates go and the arguments happen, but the part you only see if you get down on the floor with a torch and look up.

He's a restorer, and it's after nine on a Tuesday with the shutters down. The table came in with four generations of damage on it: a scorch mark, a set of compass points somebody's child gouged in about 1970, and a water ring the size of a side plate. He's spent two hours on the top and got nowhere he's happy with.

So he tips it. He gets underneath with the light to check the joints, and there it is on the underside of the rail, cut in with a chisel and blackened with age. A maker's mark and a date, in a hand that stopped working before his grandfather was born.

He sits on the floor under a dining table at half past nine, looking up at somebody's signature. He thinks about his own church, the church at the end of the road, and the thirty years of careful distance between them.

The table you've been arguing over the top of was signed underneath before any of you arrived. The written Word puts the bread and the cup in Christ's own hands on the night it began, and the Holy Spirit keeps that ownership real over whatever room you eat in.

The Mark Beneath the Table

What Four Generations Leave on a Tabletop

Every mark on that top is somebody's ordinary life, and not one of them was made in malice.

The scorch is a dish put down too fast by a woman with her hands full. The compass points are a bored child on a wet afternoon. The water ring is a glass left standing through a long conversation that mattered more than the glass did.

Restorers know this and the rest of us forget it. A damaged tabletop isn't a record of an attack. It's a record of use, of a hundred years of people eating in a hurry and talking too long, and every scar on it was left by somebody who was simply living at that table.

The same is true of the distance you've inherited. It wasn't built by villains. It was left there by people under pressure, doing their honest best with something they were frightened of getting wrong, and the marks stayed after the people went.

The Night It Was Handed Over

Here's the account of the meal where the table was first set, in the plainest form it's recorded in:

And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.Luke 22:19 (KJV)

Count whose hands are in that line. He takes, He gives thanks, He breaks, He gives, and the ones at the table appear only as the people receiving what's handed to them.

There's no committee in that sentence, no room, no discipline and no arrangement. All of it came afterward, built by people trying to guard something they knew was holy, and none of that later work is what I'm quarreling with. But the origin is one pair of hands and a sentence about His own body.

You eat at a table whose maker signed it on the night He gave Himself. The written Word keeps every verb of that night in His grip, and the Holy Spirit makes that ownership present wherever the bread is put down today.

The Signature Is Where Nobody Argues

Here's what I'd carry out of that workshop if I could take a single thing away with me.

Nobody has ever had an argument about the underside of a table. Every dispute in the history of dining happens on the top: who sits where, who's served first, whose elbows are over the line. The maker's mark sits six inches below all of it, in the dark, unchanged by any of it.

That's not a coincidence. The top is the surface where people meet each other, and meeting each other is where friction lives. The underside is where the question of ownership was settled, once, by the only person with the right to settle it, before a single plate was ever laid.

So the restorer can keep working on the marks above and stop carrying the question below. The top is his job. The signature isn't his to add, remove, or dispute, and neither is anybody else's.

You can work on the surface your whole life and never once be responsible for the signature. The written Word puts His name on the table at its making, and the Holy Spirit is the one holding what you've been trying to hold on your own.

I'm Not Ruling on Either Room

Let me be plain, because there's a version of this message that would do harm and I won't write it.

I'm not telling you which church at which end of the road has understood Him better. Both are full of people who love Christ and who've held that bread with care for generations, and the care is love even where it leaves a distance that has cost you friendships.

I am not ruling on where you should go forward and where you should keep your seat. That belongs to you, your own church and the Lord, and nothing in this message is a ruling on anybody's practice.

You can honor both rooms completely and still know whose table it is. The written Word answers the question of ownership and leaves the practice where it stands, and the Holy Spirit carries your peace about the one while you keep the other.

The Question You Can Stop Settling

Here's the turn, and it's quieter than a decision and steadier than a mood.

What's been wearing you out was never a shortage of love for His people. It was thirty years of treating a question of ownership as though it were still open, and treating yourself as one of the people who has to close it. Nobody handed you that job, and nobody has thought to take it back.

I'm taking it back now. The mark is under there. It's been under there the whole time you've been arguing about the top, and no scorch or compass point or water ring has ever touched it.

You can stop settling a question that was signed before you sat down. The written Word keeps every verb of that night in His hands, and the Holy Spirit makes this is His table a rest you can sit down inside tonight.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Say this once, slowly, with your hand still under the table.

This is His table and He set it, and His name was cut into it before anybody marked the top. The Word of God says He took the bread and gave thanks and brake it and gave it, so the making and the owning were both His. The Holy Spirit makes that ownership real in whatever room I eat in this week. I'm a guest here the same as everybody else at it. I don't have to keep settling a question that was signed underneath a hundred years before I was born. When I sit down at either end of the road, I can sit down easy, because the mark is there whether anybody looks or not.
