For the believer who found the boundary by noticing who they were surprised to see praying.
Who did you catch yourself being surprised by?
That's the question that finds the line faster than any amount of examining your beliefs. Not who you disapprove of, because you'd have noticed that years ago and dealt with it. Who surprised you. Who prayed, or gave something away, or said a true sentence about God, and some part of you registered it as unexpected.
Surprise is the tell. You cannot be surprised by something unless you were already predicting otherwise, and you cannot predict without a model, and the model is the line.
She found hers at a funeral in June, standing four rows behind a cousin she has known her entire life and has never once thought of as a believer.
He was praying. Not performing, not going along with it. Head down, lips moving, hands the way her grandmother's used to be, all the way through something long and difficult.
She looked at the back of his head and felt a jolt of surprise. Then she noticed the surprise itself, and she has been thinking about that second reaction ever since.
You can locate the line you inherited by noticing who you were surprised to see praying. The written Word says the Lord knows the ones who are His, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that knowing out of your hands.
The Model You Never Sat Down and Built
Here's why it's so hard to catch any other way.
You don't hold your line as an opinion. If you did, you could examine it, argue with it and change your mind, and most of us would have done exactly that decades ago because most of us are decent.
It sits lower than that. It's a set of predictions your mind makes automatically about who is likely to be serious about God. They are built out of childhood material nobody meant to teach you: which names got a particular pause, which people came up at which tables, whose faith was described admiringly and whose was described carefully.
By adulthood it has stopped being anything you believe. It's the shape of what you expect, which is why it survives arguments and why it can only be caught in the split second where reality contradicts it.
The Seal on the Foundation
Here's Paul, writing to Timothy in a letter soaked in worry about who could be trusted:
Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his.2 Timothy 2:19 (KJV)
Look at where certainty is located. Not in Timothy, who is the one anxious about the drift. Not in Paul, who knew the people personally and had been right about a great many of them.
The foundation stands sure because the Lord knows, and that knowing is named as the seal on the whole thing. It is the one item in that letter nobody is asked to take responsibility for.
The certainty about who is His belongs to God and was never issued to you. The written Word makes His knowing the seal, and the Holy Spirit keeps it there rather than delegating it.
Surprise Is the Sound of a Prediction Failing
Here's what I'd carry out of that funeral if I could take a single thing away with me.
When something surprises you, a prediction has just failed, and the prediction is the thing worth looking at rather than the event. Her cousin praying is not remarkable. Millions of people pray. What's remarkable is that some machinery in her had filed him as somebody who wouldn't.
That machinery is invisible while it's working correctly. You only ever meet it in the moment it gets something wrong, which means every surprise is a free and accurate report on a line you cannot otherwise see.
So the jolt at that funeral was a gift. Uncomfortable, unrequested, and more informative about her inherited boundary than a year of sincere self examination would have been.

Nothing Here Draws a New Line
Let me be plain, because there's a version of this message that would do harm and I won't write it.
Who belongs is not a question I am answering here. That question has not been handed to me, and a message that answered it would have rebuilt your line with my materials, which helps nobody.
I'm also not announcing that everyone is in. That is the same act with a warmer face on it, and it is still a person doing what the verse says God does.
You can notice the line without replacing it with a better one. The written Word leaves that knowledge with God alone, and the Holy Spirit keeps it rather than putting a pencil in your hand.
The Prediction You Can Let Fail
Here's the turn, and it's quieter than a decision and steadier than a mood.
That jolt was never contempt in you. It was a prediction failing, made by machinery you never installed and have never been able to inspect from the inside. Nobody built it deliberately, and nobody has thought to tell you that surprise is how it shows itself.
Now you know. You can stop hunting for the line in your opinions, where it has never been, and start noticing it where it actually lives, which is in the half second after somebody does something you did not expect.
You can let the prediction fail and leave the knowing with God. The written Word says the Lord knows them that are His, and the Holy Spirit makes the line I was handed is not the one He draws a relief rather than a new rule.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
Say this once, slowly, with the name in your mind and the engine off.
The Lord knows the ones who belong to Him, and what I inherited is not that line. The Word of God says the foundation of God stands sure, sealed by the fact that the Lord knows them that are His, so the certainty was never issued to me. I notice that my cousin falls beyond that boundary without deciding one thing about his standing, and the Holy Spirit keeps that knowledge in His own hands. I am not required to run a prediction I never chose and cannot defend. Everything good my family handed me stays with me, and this one goes back rather than on to anybody else. When that name surprises me again, I can let the surprise teach me instead of explaining it away.
