For the believer whose truest identity has only ever been written down as a category.
Picture a woman sitting in a school corridor with a clipboard, filling in a form for her son's new place.
It's the usual run of questions. Address, doctor, allergies, who can collect him. Then near the bottom there's a section headed religious background, with a row of boxes and a longer blank underneath marked any details the school should know.
She ticks a box without thinking about it, the way she's ticked it for thirty years. Then she looks at the longer blank and finds she has nothing to write in it.
Not because there's nothing. There's a great deal. She could tell that school about the night she was nineteen, when everything turned over in the space of an evening. She could tell them about the woman who sat with her every Tuesday for two years afterward and never once made her feel like a project. She could tell them that her son's middle name isn't a family name at all, but the name of somebody who prayed for him before he existed.
What she can't do is get any of that into a sentence that doesn't start by explaining which box she ticked and why it isn't quite what people assume.
You are named by God with a word that has no category in it, and no form has ever had a box that size. The written Word calls you a child of the Father rather than a member of a class, and the Holy Spirit makes that naming live in you rather than leaving it in a letter.

When the Category Becomes the Answer
The box wasn't the problem. Somebody in an office needs to know which assembly a child sits in, and that's a reasonable administrative question with a reasonable administrative answer.
The problem is that the box has slowly become the whole answer. Thirty years of ticking has trained her to lead with the category, and now the category is the first thing she reaches for even when the question is asking for something else entirely.
That's the strange arithmetic of it. The part of her life that contains an actual person, an actual night, and an actual rescue gets summarized as a classification, and the classification is the only bit that ever makes it onto paper.
You know that gap. It isn't dishonesty and it isn't confusion. It's what happens to anybody whose deepest belonging has been recorded, over and over, in a system built for sorting rather than for loving.
The Word He Actually Uses
Here's the line John opens with when he wants to say what believers are:
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God.1 John 3:1 (KJV)
Read what kind of word that is. Not a membership, not a classification, not a position relative to anybody. It's a family word, and family words are the ones that survive being taken out of their context.
You can say "I'm a member of" and a stranger needs to know the institution before the sentence means anything. You can say "I'm somebody's child" and a stranger understands immediately, in every country, without a single further question.
You are called a child of the Father, which is a word no filing system can hold. The written Word gives you a family name rather than a category, and the Holy Spirit makes that naming a present belonging rather than a doctrine about you.
Categories Divide, Family Names Don't
Here's what I'd carry out of that corridor if I could take a single thing away with me.
Every category in existence works by exclusion. That's not a criticism of categories, it's a description of how they function. A box on a form means something precisely because there are other boxes it isn't, and a system with one box isn't a system at all.
A family name does the opposite. It works by relation. It doesn't get its meaning by excluding anybody, and you can add a hundred more children to a family without the word child losing a single degree of force for the first one.
That's why she had nothing to write in the blank. She'd been handed a category to describe a relation, and the two shapes don't fit. The box tells the school which assembly. It cannot tell them who she is.
You hold a name that gets its meaning from relation rather than from exclusion. The written Word gives you the family word, and the Holy Spirit is the one making the relation real, so the name is His work before it's your description.
Nothing Here Is a Criticism of Your Box
Let me be plain, because there's a version of this message that would hurt you and I won't write it.
The box you tick isn't a lesser thing, and I'm not asking you to stop ticking it. There are people inside that word who loved Christ at real cost, and part of the reason you were ever sat down and told about Him is that they did.
The category isn't the enemy of the family name. It's simply a different kind of word, doing a different job, and trouble only starts when the smaller word gets asked to carry the larger one.
You can tick the box and write the family name underneath it. Scripture gives the family word without disparaging any of the later ones, and the Holy Spirit keeps the larger word underneath the smaller one rather than in competition with it.
The Blank You Can Actually Fill
Here's the turn, and it's quieter than a decision and steadier than a mood.
What emptied you at that clipboard was never a shortage of faith. It was thirty years of being asked for a classification and slowly coming to believe that the classification was the whole of the answer. Nobody set out to teach you that, and nobody has thought to correct it since.
Let me correct it now. The box records which assembly. The word underneath it is a family name, given to you by the Father, and no office anywhere has ever been issued a form long enough for it.
You can write the larger word in the smaller space and let it overflow. The written Word calls you a child of God, and the Holy Spirit makes I am His a home you're standing in rather than a category you're managing.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
Say this once, slowly, with the form face down beside you.
What I hold has its own shape, and nothing I can say about my faith has to start with the word not. The Word of God says the Father has bestowed such love that we are called the children of God, so the name I carry is a family word rather than a classification. The Holy Spirit makes that relation live in me today, and not only on a page. I don't have to fit the deepest belonging I have into a box built for sorting. I keep every word the people who raised me gave me, and I hold this one underneath it rather than against it. When the long blank comes round again, I can write something true in it.
