When I Said I Believe

For the believer who finally heard her own voice in the middle of everybody else's.

It's eleven minutes past ten on a Sunday, and the room has just started on the old words.

She's in the fourth row on the left, where she's been since 2011. Everything is exactly as it is every week. The radiator on the far wall is ticking, somebody's child is being taken out, and the whole room comes in together on the first two words the way a congregation does when it has said a thing several thousand times.

Then something small and strange happens. She hears her own voice.

Not louder than anybody's. It simply separates for about half a second, the way one instrument does in an orchestra when you happen to tune into it. She hears herself saying the first two words with her own mouth, in her own voice, at her own pitch.

And she cannot get past them. The room carries on without her, correctly and warmly, all the way to the end. She stands there for the rest of it holding two words she's said ten thousand times as though somebody had just handed them to her.

You are able to hear your own voice inside the room's, and what you say there is genuinely yours. The written Word puts belief in the heart and confession in the mouth as one act, and the Holy Spirit is the one joining them in the fourth row on a Sunday.

What a Congregation Does to a Voice

A room saying something together is one of the good sounds in the world, and it has a cost nobody mentions.

When forty people say a sentence at once, no individual voice is audible, including your own. You can hear the shape of the words, you can feel them in your chest, and what reaches your ears is the room rather than you. That's most of the comfort of it.

It also means you can say a thing for years without ever hearing yourself say it. Your voice goes into a general sound, and the general sound comes back, and at no point does anybody, yourself included, hear you agreeing to anything in particular.

That isn't a flaw in congregational worship. It's a description of how sound works in a room with forty people in it, and it's the reason so many of us have said true words for decades without ever being present at our own saying of them.

One Act With Two Halves

Here's the verse, in the half that gets quoted less often:

For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.Romans 10:10 (KJV)

Two organs, one act. That's the shape of the sentence, and the writer plainly cannot imagine the halves working separately.

Notice the word he uses for the outside half. Confession. Not recitation, not participation, not joining in. A confession is something a specific person says about themselves, and it is always in the first person singular whatever else is going on in the room.

You are doing something personal even when the sound in the room is corporate. The written Word names your heart and your mouth individually, and the Holy Spirit is the one joining them in you today.

The Room Says It Together, You Say It Alone

Here's what I'd carry out of that building if I could take a single thing away with me.

Both of those sentences are true at the same time and we've only ever been taught the first one. The room does say it together, and that togetherness is real and worth everything.

And underneath the corporate sound, forty separate people are each saying I believe in the first person singular, about themselves, out of their own mouths, with their own histories behind the words. The unity isn't a blending. It's forty individual confessions that happen to be in the same room at the same time.

Which is why hearing your own voice for half a second wasn't a distraction from what the room was doing. It was the first time you'd noticed what you were doing.

The room's one voice is forty people each saying it in the first person singular. The written Word makes confession personal even in company, and the Holy Spirit is the one making yours your own.

This Isn't a Criticism of Saying It Together

Let me be plain, because there's a version of this message that would do harm and I refuse to write it.

Nothing here suggests the corporate voice is a lesser thing. That sound has carried people through wars, funerals, and mornings when they could not have spoken a line of it alone, and being carried by a room when you have nothing is one of God's kinder arrangements.

I'm also not saying these particular words are binding, or that a believer whose room has never recited a line of them is missing something. The same faith is held wherever it's held.

You can be carried by the room and still be present at your own confession. Scripture makes it personal without making it solitary, and the Holy Spirit does the joining rather than the separating.
